Winter Moving Tips
Moving in Utah winters can be stressful and present many challenges such as fighting bitter cold temperatures and snow or ice on the ground. Unfortunately, you can’t control the weather and you still need to move. One of the best ways you can guarantee a successful winter move is by hiring our moving professionals at Moving U Forward to help you manage your move. Read on for tips to help make your winter move as smooth and stress-free as possible.
1) Be Prepared and Be Flexible
The weather can be unpredictable during winter. Keep a close eye on the forecast for any large storms coming through on moving day. During severe weather you will want to be in contact with our movers and may need to reschedule your move.
2) Start Packing Well in Advance
The sooner you start packing up your belongings the easier it will be for everyone involved. It takes time to complete this task and can be very stressful if left until too close to moving day. This may not apply if we are doing the packing for you.
3) Check Utilities at the New House
You should ensure that all utilities have been set-up and are fully functioning before you start moving. Nothing is worse than not having heat or lights in the dead of winter.
4) Prepare Your Home for the Move
Before moving you will want to create a safe moving environment. Winter weather conditions are more dangerous due to slick surfaces. Make sure to remove snow from your driveway and shovel the walks with a wide enough path for moving large furniture from your house. Ensure your walkways are free of ice by using a de-icer. The last thing you want is to slip and fall causing an injury or breaking any fragile items. If you are moving locally, it is a good idea to visit your new home before your moving date and check and clear those walkways as well. Contact you real estate agent or property manager to check and prepare the new property on long distance moves.
5) Protect your Belongings
Take extra care when packing your belongings and double pack fragile items. Delicate items like dishware and glass are particularly susceptible to damage with colder temperatures and rapid temperature shifts. Your electronics don’t care for the cold weather either. Extra packing will buffer them from drastic temperature changes.
6) Get Your Car Serviced and Ready for Distance Moves
Make sure you have your car winterized, including all fluids topped off, tires and brakes checked. You should carry a gas can, a good snow shovel, spare winter gear, extra blankets and food in case you get stuck during your trip. A couple towels may come in handy for wiping down wet boots, wet boxes or cleaning up a spill.
Moving in the winter months doesn’t have to be as hard as it sounds. With a little forethought and consideration, together we can make it an ideal move.
